Archbishop Jose Gomez, 67, was elected president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for a three-year term. He was already serving as vice president, under Houston’s Cardinal Daniel DiNardo. The native of Mexico, who is a member of Opus Dei and was ordained a priest in Spain, will be the first Latino and the first immigrant to lead the episcopal conference. Archbishop Gomez began serving as a bishop in 2001, when he was named auxiliary for the Archdiocese of Denver. From there, he went on to lead the Archdiocese of San Antonio, until being named Coadjutor and then Archbishop of Los Angeles in 2010 and 2011. Read More... From the Pope

Pope Francis, through a decree of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, has inscribed the celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Loreto into the General Roman Calendar. The decree notes that the Shrine of the Holy House of Loreto, venerated by generations of pilgrims and honored by numerous popes, “recalls the mystery of the Incarnation, leading all those who visit it to consider ‘the fullness of time,’ when God sent his Son, born of a woman, as well as to meditate both on the words of the Angel announcing the Good News and on the words of the Virgin in response to the divine call.” The Congregation also published the liturgical texts for the memorial, which will be celebrated each year on December 10. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will gather for the 2019 Fall General Assembly in Baltimore, November 11-13. During the assembly, the bishops will elect a new president, vice president, and six committee chairs. They will also discuss and vote on seven action items. Read More... From the Church

At a recent meeting in Warsaw, the Polish Bishops’ Conference agreed to initiate the diocesan phase of the beatification of St. John Paul II’s parents. Below is the official announcement from their website. The Polish Bishops’ Conference has agreed (nihil obstat) to begin by the Archdiocese of Krakow the process of beatification of the parents of John Paul II – Karol Wojtyła [Sr.] and Emilia nee Kaczorowska. In an apostolic letter released September 30, Pope Francis has declared that the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time will be devoted to the celebration and study of the Word of God. (September 30 is the feast day of St. Jerome, who is known especially for his translation of Scriptures into Latin.) The document is called Aperuit illis, from its opening words, taken from St. Luke’s Gospel, where the Evangelist describes how the Risen Jesus appeared to His disciples, and how “He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” Recalling the importance given by the Second Vatican Council to rediscovering Sacred Scripture for the life of the Church, Pope Francis says he wrote this Apostolic Letter in response to requests from the faithful around the world to celebrate a Sunday of the Word of God.
