The bishop of Portsmouth in England will launch a new “powerhouse of prayer” on a remote Island in his diocese, staffed by six religious sisters and a priest. The Adoremus Centre will be founded on the far-flung island of Alderney, part of the Channel Islands, about 90 miles off the southern coast of England. In fact, it’s closer to France.......Read more Teen & Young Adult Retreat Team Looking for teens and young adults to help lead youth retreats.

God knows there are a variety reasons for why newspaper subscriptions have plummeted, but one very compelling source of discontent is that people feel they cannot trust the media to tell the truth. Take, for example, the following story which appeared in the August/September edition of the magazine First Things: “The case of fourteen-year-old Valentina Maureira, a Chilean girl who suffered from cystic fibrosis, illustrates... the power of social influence. Maureira made a YouTube video begging her government to legalize assisted suicide. She admitted that the idea to end her life began after she heard about the case of Brittany Maynard, the twenty-nine-year-old woman who campaigned for the legalization of assisted suicide before ending her own life. Maureira, however, later changed her mind after meeting another young woman suffering from cystic fibrosis who encouraged her to persevere in the face of adversity. Her father complained that the media were only interested in her story when she wanted to die.” Do you see the problem? Now before we start grinding our axes too vigorously, it’s good to remember and adopt The Christophers’ mantra: “Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.” In the same periodical some excellent news apropos of parish life appears: “We now have a sizable body of medical research which suggests that prayer, religious faith, participation in a religious community, and practices like cultivating gratitude, forgiveness, and other virtues can reduce the risk of depression, lower the risk of suicide, diminish drug use, and aid in recovery.” We are social creatures and we need a strong community if we hope to push back the ubiquitous demons of futility and darkness. Sadly, the temptation to isolate ourselves has overwhelmed our culture and shows itself in our penchant for choosing our phone over the person sitting right next to us. There is a theological insight here, namely we were created by a God who is a community of Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Therefore, we will never be at peace with ourselves in self-imposed isolation. A powerful illustration of how geared we are to be in communion with others is conveyed by the following story: “A few years ago, a man in his thirties took his own life by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge (as more than fifteen hundred other people have done since the bridge was built). After his death, his psychiatrist went with the medical examiner to the man’s apartment, where they found his diary. The last entry, written just hours before he died, said, ‘I’m going to walk to the bridge. If one person smiles at me on the way, I will not jump,’ (First Things).” These are difficult times because though we are connected by myriad technological possibilities, it seems we’ve never been so far apart. Thank God for the gift of faith, which unites us both to each other and to our Heavenly Father. Our challenge is to live our faith more consistently, pray more fervently, and offer our sufferings more generously. Doing so will give us the grace to touch our broken world with compassion and love. Saint Teresa of Calcutta was famous for living her faith with supernatural hope. She instructed her Sisters (and us), “Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.” For those of you who are just learning to pray on a daily basis, do not forget to take a few minutes every day to rest in God in the silence of your heart. Ask your Guardian Angel to help you enter God’s Presence and then just rest there for a while. Encountering the Lord in prayer heals the little hurts that we experience every day and reminds us that our life is a gift to others. Pray more, smile more, and more people will decide their life is worth living.
May God teach us to pray well, with our hearts wide open! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin Evening of Recollection * Led by Fr. This weekend we come to the unofficial end of summer and collectively wonder where it went? As we celebrate Labor Day by refraining from any serious labor, our thoughts turn to the opportunities for spiritual growth that abound in our deanery. For example, “That Man Is You” begins on September 12th at Our Lady of Peace. God knows we need more men to be strong in their faith and this requires effort and formation. Please prayerfully consider joining this group - a description of what they’ll be learning is provided for your discernment: “The Fall semester will tackle head-on the issue that most separates the Church from modern society - the issue of love. Did you realize that only 17% of millennials list “getting married” as one of their top three goals in life? Nonetheless, the Catholic Church was founded by the God who is Love and has been contemplating the mystery for over 2000 years. Only the Church has a vision so vast that it embraces the latest neurological findings while soaring to the Marriage Feast of the Lamb. It is time for us to tell our story! We will look at seven critical moments from the Nuptial Mass to answer the question regarding love. We will see that Love Is: desire, a free gift, communion, expansive, unconditional, sacrificial, eternal, and finally, yes, it is possible! There is great hope! We will find Love made Incarnate in the person of Jesus Christ and in a unique way expressed in the life of the Holy Family at Nazareth. The two greatest saints in all the Church are a mom and a dad! In the spring, we will help men understand the personal pathway to experiencing and living love! Modeled on the incredibly successful TMIY National Retreat, this semester will help men understand and dissect their spiritual lives as never before. They will be able to identify the issues that are truly keeping them from the desires of their hearts and receive practical advice about how to take the next step in the spiritual life. Finally, we will have the opportunity to encounter Our Lady in a very personal way. This promises to be a special year of TMIY. According to Steve Bollman: "I'm more excited than I've been in many years. The new year of TMIY can truly be a game-changer - both for men in TMIY and the larger culture." Other opportunities include the two Bible studies that are currently underway (it’s not too late to join them) as well as the monthly Evenings of Recollection. And for those who love the saints, please reserve a seat for the September 17th performance of Sister Nancy at the Lucille Tack Center in Spencer. Sister does an amazing job of capturing the beauty and heroic goodness of Saint Catherine of Siena as she shares her life with us. This is a unique opportunity and the tickets are selling quickly. Speaking of saints, I believe there is still some room on the bus that will be going to La Crosse on September 20th to venerate the relics of Saint Padre Pio. I hope to go too, but will have to drive as I have the school Mass at 8:00 a.m. (and the bus leaves at 7:45 a.m. – I think Father Berns did this on purpose...). Additionally, you’re always welcome to join us for the Movie of the Month: our first movie is Sunday, September 10th at 1:00 p.m. in the Columbia room. We’ll be watching “Assisi Underground,” a fascinating and true tale of how that little town saved thousands of Jews during World War II. And not to worry, the movie will be done well before the Packers kick off against the Seahawks! Finally, we’ll be hosting a marriage enrichment series titled “Beloved” beginning on October 29th in the Columbia Room. This will be a wonderful way to grow closer to God and to your spouse and family. Insofar as our faith seeks to understand, we’re blessed to have these opportunities – I hope you’ll take advantage and get involved! May God grant us the courage to engage our faith, so that it may bear fruit for the salvation of souls! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin Christ the King Council of Catholic Women (P.C.C.W.) Fall meeting will take place on Monday-September 11, 2017 in the dining hall of church at 7 p.m. An invitation is extended to the ladies of the parish to attend to see what your P.CC.W is all about and be part of the discussion of the activities, etc. for the upcoming year. Your participation, as a member, is necessary to keep this organization actively involved in the Mfld. Deanery.
