Evangelization is especially urgent as the “nones” — the number of the population who do not identify with a religion, continues to grow, he said. Bishop Baron, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and well-known evangelizer for Word on Fire, addressed the crowd of Catholic bishops and leaders gathered at the Catholic Convocation in Orlando, Florida through a live video feed on July 4, the last day of the gathering. “We do have a fight on our hands, but the great saints of our Church have always loved a good fight, and we should too.”......Read more

Going to College? Know someone who is?
Do you know someone who is heading off to college this fall? A new website sponsored by the Serra Club can help. At www.newmanconnection.com , click “Get Connected” and your students coming to campus can sign up to receive information about campus ministry at prospective schools across the nation. Don’t miss out on the opportunities to meet great people and ex- perience the prayer, service, and social events that campus ministry offers. If you know someone going to college, make sure they visit www.newmanconnection.com ! ** Planning ahead ** we are in need of catechists and helpers for the 2017-18 year! Please contact Deb if you are interested in helping out! Praised be Jesus Christ! One of the teachers at Aquinas High School in La Crosse began his class by asking the students to name their intentions so that they could be remembered in pray- er. As you can imagine, the students sometimes took advantage of this and mentioned crazy things or inordinately extended their list so as to have less time for school work. Today I submit to you some things I hope you’ll pray about this week, the first of which is our 5th annual Parish Pull. God has unfailingly blessed us with beautiful weather over the years and we are begging Him to do so again. This year we will exceed the $100,000.00 mark in terms of what we’ve given to charity. This year the proceeds are going to Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul, and the Frederic Ozanam Family Shelter. Please remember this event in your prayers and if you’ve never come before, join us this year for what has become a wonderful community builder. Another intention is to continue to pray for the transition that is taking place at the hospital. Although the hospital is no longer Catholic, it continues to serve men and women of deep faith in Jesus Christ. Our local chapter of the Catholic Medical Association has been working to retain spiritual services for all patients, as well as striving to protect conscience rights for doctors and nurses. We pray that no disordered services will be provided (e.g. abortion, tubal ligation, vasectomy, euthanasia), but if they are, that dissenting medical workers will not be coerced to assist in procedures that compromise the gift of our dignity and sexuality. While we are praying that the new hospital will flourish, we want to make it clear that we will not quietly acquiesce to any practices contrary to God’s divine law. Speaking of the hospital, the Mother Frances Streitel chapel that is being constructed in the church basement is progressing. We’ve been working at getting the water out of the basement as well as enhancing the heating and cooling system. For the record, the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother very generously donated to us the old stained glass windows that adorned their original chapel (built in 1901), and these are now safely stored in our basement. These windows depict Saint Henry, Saint Boniface, and Saint Aloysius Gonzaga and will be beautiful once the chapel is finished. We hope to have the floor poured soon and then we’ll host an open house and you’ll be welcome to see the work we’ve done thus far. God willing, the chapel will be ready for us between now and Christmas. Another exciting pray- er intention is for our mission group. On July 16th 5 members of St. John’s will be flying to Tanzania to work with Sister Sabina’s religious order. As you know, we’ve established a beautiful missionary outreach in Tanzania and we’re now taking the next step. These parishioners will be blazing a trail that we hope to follow: God willing, we’ll go on a mission trip to Tanzania in 2019 and you’re all invited! Our pilgrims will return home on July 28th, so let’s beg Saint Christopher to help them travel safely. Our last prayer intention is for our young couples getting married. The Church encourages us to list their names so that all of the faithful will spiritually support them as they begin to live their wedding vows. We have many weddings and for that we thank God. By the way, we hope to be offering a great formation opportunity for couples beginning this fall – it’s titled “The Choice Wine” and you’ll be hearing more about it soon. May God hear and answer our prayers according to His inscrutable and perfect will! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin Ministry Participants: The ministry schedule will be worked on for Sept. / Oct. / Nov. / Dec. of 2017 . U.S. Bishops Chairman Calls Senate To “Reject Changes” To Social Safety Net - WASHINGTON—Bishop Frank J. Dewane of Venice, Florida, Chairman of the U.S. Bishops' Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, has provided a more detailed critique of the Senate "discussion draft" health care bill, dubbed the "Better Care Reconciliation Act" (BCRA). "Removing vital coverage for those most in need is not the answer to our nation's health care problems, and doing so will not help us build toward the common good," said Bishop Dewane. "For the sake of persons living on the margins of our health care system, we call on the Senate to reject changes intended to fundamentally alter the social safety net for millions of people."....Read More News from the Pope: Pope Francis to new Cardinals: your mission is to serve - (Vatican Radio) Pope Francis presided over an Ordinary Public Consistory for the Creation of Cardinals on Wednesday in St. Peter’s Basilica. If you know someone going to college, make sure they visit www.newmanconnection.com ! Praised be Jesus Christ! We’ve had a traumatic spring around the rectory and some of us are still reeling. Maude and Floyd (the name of the drake betrothed to Maude) decided to raise their brood on the west side of the church this year and that proved to be disastrous. Some meddling kids destroyed their five eggs and things went quickly downhill from there. Maude was practically inconsolable and while none of us is sure of the cause of her accident, the end result was a very flattened Maude laying just 100 yards from my office in the middle of Chestnut Street. Father Sedlacek offered the requiem Mass for her eternal rest and he spoke eloquently of how much she meant to this scribe. But just when it seemed the summer would be one of discontent Maude was discovered to be alive – if cats have nine lives, then it appears that ducks have at least two! Maude is again safely behind our bleeding heart bush and seems to be raising a new brood. As for who died on Chestnut, it’s too late to do an autopsy. We did receive a mysterious note that admitted responsibility for the poor duck’s death. Signed “J.B.”, the note indicated that his addiction to eating cheesecake while driving has caused more than one of God’s critters to die young! Besides making clear the dangers of consuming cheesecake in cars, the point of this circuitous introduction is to affirm that God’s creation was given to us as a gift. There is humor in creation; the animals entertain us just by being what they are and though we sometimes treat them cruelly, they are God’s gift to us. Get out and see God’s creation this summer – dubbed a 5th Gospel or an 8th Sacrament, nature is a source of wonder for those who take the time to enjoy it. Someone recently gave me a Hiking Wisconsin book and it reminds one of the beautiful state we call home. How many times do you get outside for recreation during an average month? We’re all busy, too busy, and it takes discipline to enjoy the world God created for us. Watching God’s creatures oftentouchessomethingdeepinus, thusbegettingwonderand awe, and these are among the most noble sentiments we can feel. And for those unsure of where to go for such inspiration, here are a few ideas: hiking in Wisconsin is glorious and we have both McMillan Marsh and the Mead Wildlife Area practically in our backyard. Not far to the north is the wonderful Ice Age Trail, and a couple hours south is the famous Sparta/ Elroy trail. Another source of awe and wonder is to visit beautiful churches. Sometimes these excursions are called “steeple chases” – the meaning is obvious, no?! Wisconsin has two minor basilicas, Holy Hill and St. Josaphat in Milwaukee, and they’re both very worthy of a visit. Northeastern Iowa also has a minor basilica, St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville; visit the church and then stop by the “Field of Dreams,” made famous by the 1989 movie. There are other remarkably beautiful churches in that area and you can look them up at spiresoffaith.com. For years I’ve been visiting the various parishes in our own diocese and have only about 20 left to see. Thankfully, you’ll soon be able to see every single one of them from the comfort of your own living room: a handsome new book has been published and will be available sometime this fall. The Diocese of La Crosse will celebrate its sesquicentennial in March of 2018 and this book has been created to help us thank God for all that He has done in our midst. I’ve seen the book and it’s amazing! And for $33.00, it can be yours. More information will be coming soon.
May God help us see the world as He sees it; and may this lead to true worship of God, from Whom all blessings flow!
