From the Pope:
Pope Francis recently released a video message accompanying his prayer intention for June, which this month is “For inclusive and respectful social networks”. In his prayer intention for the month of June 2018, Pope Francis said: "Let us pray together that social networks may work towards that inclusiveness which respects others for their differences." It has become the custom of Pope Francis to release a video message detailing his prayer intention for each month. Read More...

CAPTIVE CARWASH & BAKE SALE – Sun., June 17
All cars parked in the parking lot during the 8 & 10 a.m. Masses will be washed by the young people participating in a Catholic Camp, Conference or Pilgrimage. This car wash is a way to raise aware- ness through service as well as invite those who are interested to help them financially by a free-will offering at the exit. The same youth will also be holding a bake sale after all Sunday Masses – yum, yum!! If you have any other questions, please contact Mr. Dan Kitzhaber Praised be Jesus Christ! Now that summer is almost officially here (June 21), it’s a good time to think about recreation and how it contributes to our well-being. Not that the gamers (i.e. people who spend an inordinate amount of time playing video games) out there are actually reading this, but it’s safe to say that not all hobbies produce virtue and true inner peace. One thing we must keep in mind is that virtue is almost always found in between two extremes. For example, a workaholic and a sluggard both have an unhealthy sense of the role of work. The virtuous person remembers that God Himself rested on the seventh day, therefore paving the way to true recreation. One characteristic of a virtuous hobby is that it is good for us, both physically and spiritually. We live in a sedentary society, one that does far less physical work than was the case even just a generation ago. Everyone knows the benefits of exercise but that in and of itself is not sufficient to get us off the couch. Walking is a great way to get outside and do some- thing that is good for body and soul. I meet a friend every week for an hour-long walk and I also walk to the Adoration chapel every Wednesday morning. Like all of you, I’d like to get out more often, but I’m grateful to have at least two times every week when I walk for a significant amount of time. And while nobody would ever claim that it’s a genuine form of recreation, fasting is one of the best things we can do for both body and soul. One expert had this to say: “Studies tell us that among other benefits, fasting increases growth hormone levels, maintains muscle and bone tissue, reduces inflammation, improves our memory, produces clarity in thinking, boosts metabolism, increases insulin sensitivity, and of course everyone’s favorite, supports fat loss.” Couple fasting with regular exercise and both your body and soul will thank you – now that’s true recreation. Along more conventional lines, people find travel, reading, and a good movie to be restorative – these can be relatively inexpensive and thoroughly enjoyable. For example, we have an exceptional library in Marshfield and if they don’t have the book you’re looking for, they can acquire it at no cost. Recently the News Herald listed the top 20 places to visit in Wisconsin and it was a convincing reminder of all the beautiful day trips one could make without breaking the bank. When we were kids Dad would take us to Ontario (it’s in Wisconsin) where we canoed the Kickapoo River. Those are memories I will have for all of my lifetime. Another memory I have of sum- mer nights is of the Aurora Borealis, the extraordinary “northern lights.” About once a summer I was out late enough to see the night time sky come to life and seemingly dance in a most exotic way. For those who camp, a night out under the stars is just about as inspiring, especially if you time it with the annual “tears of Saint Lawrence,” the Perseid meteor shower that peaks around the feast of St. Lawrence (August 10th). I went fishing on the Gulf of Mexico in August of 2002 and on the way down the Mississippi Delta we witnessed dozens of falling stars; again, a memory I will have with me for all of my days. Saint Francis and others discovered the reality that Moth- er Nature is a sort of 5th Gospel – it reveals a lot about God and His extraordinary creativity. I hope we have a chance to get out this summer and enjoy the world God gave us. We can only thrive when we attain balance between the work God has given us to accomplish and the need for recreation. And so may our leisure be virtuous and our work ever more tranquil.
May God show us how to rest in Him as we receive His Son in Holy Communion every Sunday! From the Pope:
Pope Francis has reminded believers that Confirmation is an “undeserved gift” to be welcomed with gratitude, safeguarded with care and lived with docility allowing oneself to be shaped and moulded by the Spirit in order to ‘reflect’ the light of Christ in today’s world. Speaking to the pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Wednesday General Audience, the Pope continued his series of reflections on the Sacrament of Confirmation. Read More... The Sisters are coming! The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist from Ann Arbor Michigan are coming in June!
We have two sisters, Sister Martin Thérèse and Sister Mary Avila coming to Christ the King on June 9-16! They will be staying at the rectory. June 11-15 they will be offering Summer Camp for our students who will be entering grades 1-8 in the fall. We just found out they could come and details are being updated day by day. They will be flying into Minneapolis on June 9 and departing from Minneapolis on June 15. Join us during the week: Tuesday, June 12 - the Sisters will give a talk from 6:30-7:30pm at church. Refreshments to follow. Thursday, June 14 - we will hold a parish pot luck at 6pm in the church basement - all are welcome! Please check out the table in the gathering room to volunteer, there are many sign-up sheets. There are many opportunities to help! Registration forms for the children’s Summer Camp with the Sisters may also be found in the gathering room. Finally, please pray for safe travels for the Sisters and that we have a successful week! Praised be Jesus Christ! This weekend Saint John’s will be rolling out their Mother Streitel Center project. They’re finishing the church basement and it will contain classroom space, the Saint John Paul II Adoration chapel, and a bathroom. I’ll let you know when it’s done so that you can sign up for a weekly hour of Adoration (some of you are already doing this). The projects around Christ the King are basically already done for the year, which is a reason to rejoice. As you know, we did some work on our perennial water issues last fall on the East side of the church. And while it was a significant improvement, we still had some water in the basement as the frost went out. My parents’ home is similar – sometimes it’s as if the building sits on a spring that is irrepressible. Moving right along, two months ago we replaced all of the church siding. In the pro- cess we also did a thorough job of insulating both the walls and the attic – much to the dismay of a bat who decided to attend the 4:00 p.m. Mass one Saturday back in April! This winter the difference will be noticeable, especially for those who are members of the choir. And speaking of the choir, we are at a point in our parish history when the biggest challenges will be to replenish the ranks of parishioners who are actively involved. Some of you sing very well and the Holy Spirit might inspire you to come up and help lead the singing. Others could help us with being a reader (Lector) or an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. If you see a need, please do not be bashful: let me or Deacon Jeff know and we’ll sign you up (you can also call the parish office). Back to parish improvements: we now have a big screen TV in the basement for all of the Packer games this fall. I’m just kidding; by this point in the article I wonder how many people are still reading . . . . The TV is for overflow crowds, such as Christmas, Easter, big funerals, and once in a while the 4:00 p.m. Mass (when 75% of Loyal’s population is present). We’ve been in violation of our fire code at times and this will allow us to send the latecomers to the basement where they can watch and see the Mass just fine. We’ll send someone down with Jesus for Communion too. We also updated our parish sign and it’s both noble and easy to read. As far as future projects, the pews are aging rapidly and we have a plan for replacing them when the time comes. Moreover, our sound system is still working pretty well, but when it dies we have a plan in place to replace it. Thanks to some ob- servant parishioners and an exceptional parish staff, the church and grounds are among the most beautiful in the whole dio- cese. Before I close, I’d like to remind you to welcome and pray for the Sisters who will be coming to lead our summer school from June 11-15th. Many of our young people have never seen a Sister in a religious habit and this will be a real gift for us. The Sisters come to us from Ann Arbor, Michigan and are members of the Dominican order (i.e. formed by Saint Dominic in the 13th century). Because this is our first time hosting the Sisters, we’ll need your prayers so that all will go smoothly. We are planning an evening when you’ll be invited to come and meet the Sisters in person. When I was a kid we had Sisters come every summer to teach us our faith and they did a wonderful job of inspiring us and allowing us to have some fun too. Of course, part of it was just the joy of getting off the farm for a few days – have I ever mentioned how difficult my upbringing was?! Okay, thus ends this “state of the parish” update. Thanks for tuning in.
May God help us to build our faith on the rock of His Son’s sacrifice, so that we will love Him in the Mass! Mark your calendars!!!
